Lumens, beam shape and why the brightest light is not the best one
Lumens are the only number most bike lights advertise, and on their own they tell you very little. A lumen figure is total light output — it says nothing about where that light goes.
Beam shape is the missing specification
Two lights of 600 lumens can behave completely differently.
A round, symmetrical beam throws light in a circle. Half of it goes into the sky and into the eyes of anyone approaching. Cheap and common.
A shaped beam with a cut-off puts light on the road ahead and stops abruptly at the top, like a car’s dipped headlight. More of the output does useful work and none of it dazzles oncoming riders.
On a shared path — and around Malden that is most evening riding — a shaped beam at 400 lumens is more useful and far more considerate than a round beam at 1200.
How much light for what riding
- Lit streets, being seen: 100 to 300 lumens is enough, on flash or low.
- Unlit road or path, seeing where you are going: 400 to 800 lumens with a shaped beam.
- Fast on unlit descents or trails: 800 to 1500 lumens, and a helmet light in addition so the beam follows your eyes.
Past about 1500 lumens on a road bike you are buying runtime problems and annoying everyone else.
Runtime is the number that matters more
Manufacturers quote runtime at the lowest setting and lumens at the highest, and the two figures never apply at the same time. Look for a table giving runtime per mode.
The practical question: does it last your longest ride, in the cold, with the battery at a year old? Assume you get about 70% of the quoted figure once those are accounted for, and choose accordingly.
Flashing or steady
Flashing is more attention-grabbing in daylight and on lit streets. Steady lets other road users judge your distance and speed, which flashing actively prevents.
The arrangement that works: steady front light so you can see and be judged, plus a second flashing rear. On unlit paths, steady front only — a flashing beam on an unlit surface makes the ground appear to jump.
Mounting
- Aim it down. The single most common fault. Ride behind a friend and have them tell you where your beam lands — it should be on the road 10 to 20 feet ahead, not in the trees.
- Rubber strap mounts survive vibration better than plastic clips and fit any bar diameter.
- Check tightness weekly. A light that rotates down mid-ride lights the front wheel.
- Handlebar space is scarce. If your bars are full, an out-front mount clears them.
Water resistance
IPX4 handles splashes and light rain. IPX6 handles heavy rain. IPX7 survives immersion. For New England commuting, IPX6 or better is a sensible minimum — the failure mode is water reaching the USB port and corroding it.
Whatever the rating, close the port cover properly. Almost every water-damaged light we see had the flap open.
Charging and batteries
USB-C is worth insisting on: one cable for everything and a port that survives being plugged in with cold hands. Removable batteries are useful for long rides; sealed units are simpler and better sealed.
Lithium capacity falls in the cold, so a January commute gets less runtime than the same ride in June. Charge indoors, and carry a small spare rear light in winter.
Come in and see the beams
We are open weekday afternoons on Broadway and we will darken a corner of the shop so you can see the difference between a round beam and a shaped one. It is not subtle, and it decides the purchase for most people.
Mode memory, and the small thing that decides which light you keep
A light that starts on maximum every time it is switched on will blind everyone on a shared path and drain in an hour. A light with mode memory starts where you left it.
It sounds trivial and it is the feature riders complain about most once they own the light. Check it in the shop by switching on, changing mode, switching off and switching on again.
Battery indicators worth having
A single LED that turns red at 20% is the minimum. A four-segment indicator is far more useful, because it tells you at the start of a ride whether you have enough for the return leg.
Some lights step down automatically to a low mode when the battery is nearly flat rather than simply switching off. That is a genuinely good feature on a commuter light and it is rarely advertised.
Helmet lights as a second beam
A light on the helmet points where you look rather than where the bike points, which matters at junctions and on twisting paths. It also lets you make eye contact with a driver by turning your head, which is a small and surprisingly effective habit.
Keep it modest — 200 to 400 lumens — because a bright helmet light dazzles anyone you look at directly.
Runtime in the cold, once more
Every runtime figure on a package is measured at room temperature. On a February evening in Massachusetts, expect substantially less. Plan around the low mode rather than the high one, and carry a small backup rather than hoping.
